This course is an opportunity to expand your photographic process beyond digital media. The magic of antique and alternative techniques ensure your work stands out. Gain the knowledge and skills to capture unique moments that leave a lasting impression.
Students with an interest in hands-on approaches to photography who want to build vocabulary in photographic techniques. Photographic experience is not required but preferred.
Gailan Gray (Fresno) is a photographic-based artist who works with polaroids, film, and digital media, exploring the realm of queerness in his artwork. Gray was born in Exeter, California, and knew from a very early age that he was a queer, creative person. He holds a B.A. in Art from Fresno State and an MFA in photography from San Jose State University. Gray has been steadily teaching throughout California since 2018.
Moira McDonald
Moira McDonald is an Australian-American photographic artist working, living, and making in the San Francisco Bay Area. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from California College of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from San Jose State University. Her photography summons images through diverse approaches using simplified analog processes systematically. Her photographs have been widely exhibited throughout the United States and abroad.
Brian Taylor
Brian Taylor is an instructor leading photography courses for arts organizations across the country. He was a photography professor at San José State University for 40 years, and served as chair of the Department of Art and Art History. As a practicing artist, he is known for his innovative, handmade books and artworks exploring 19th Century alternative photographic processes. His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the permanent collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY.
Nicole Ellis
Nicole Ellis is a photo-centric artist from Fresno, California. Ellis’s work is process oriented and intertwines the elements of time, space, and psychology. Each image is a window into the intricate relationship between the self and its surroundings. Double exposures, alternative processes, and manipulations to imagery by hand are often implemented in the artist’s practice.
