Report of the Chair

Remarks by Murray L. Galinson
Chair of the Board
CSU Board of Trustees – Chair’s Report
November 17, 2004

Congratulations to Alexander Gonzalez, president of the Sacramento campus on his election as chair of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in October in Miami. Alex’s term runs until October 2005 at which time we hope he will be re-elected.

And speaking of President Gonzalez, I was pleased to participate in his inauguration as president of CSU Sacramento in early October. Other Trustees in attendance were Trustees Chandler, Farar, Gowgani, Guerra, Guzman Moore, Kaiser, and Mehta, and, of course, Chancellor Reed. It was a festive event and we wish Dr. Gonzalez much success.

Also, congratulations to Rollin Richmond, president of Humboldt State on his induction as a Fellow in the California Academy of Sciences. Dr. Richmond was recognized by the Academy for his pioneering work early in his career in intensive research in genetics and evolution.

The California State University Maritime Academy celebrated its 75th anniversary on Saturday, October 2, and CSU San Marcos is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

Of special note, Trustee Melinda Guzman Moore was included in the nation’s top “100 Most Influential Hispanics” as designated by Hispanic Business magazine.

This is the final meeting for Alumni Trustee Fred Pierce. Due to Increased demands on his time, Mr. Pierce decided not to accept appointment to a new term as Alumni Trustee. Fred, we will miss you.

I am pleased to inform the members of the Board that Chancellor Reed was appointed chair of the Council on Governmental Affairs of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. This national organization held its annual meeting in San Diego this past weekend.

That concludes my report.

Chancellor Reed, would you present your report.
