“I try to mix colors that surprise me, feel unfamiliar or allude to another time period. The colors we see in products, advertising and fashion trickle down from the kingdom of Pantone in a very controlled way that give us the palette we live with at any given time. Playing with and against these colors in painting gives me sensations I enjoy of specific places, eras and even tastes or temperatures. Color itself is probably more interesting to me than the genre of painting in particular." 

“This brayer is a roller typically used for printmaking, but against its intended use, I get interesting textures on paintings with it."

“While brushes are obviously my main tool as a painter, recently I've been trying to avoid brush marks in lieu of smooth, poured or watery surfaces. I think the 'artist's hand' is often fetishized through visible brush marks, as in Impressionist painters like Monet. I prefer to show my 'hand' in my work in other ways."

“I must have 40 sketchbooks, chronicling eras of my life. While most ideas seem conceived, reared and trapped in digital devices these days, hand drawing and writing can feel almost luxuriously slow and cared-for. Here, I was developing ideas for an installation at the San Diego New Children's Museum." 

“As an artist, old clothes don't get thrown away, they just get relegated to the studio. These boots have bits of color from many different projects over the years, like a core sample of my palettes over time."
