Play Ball

The roar of the crowd. The crack of the bat. The aroma of freshly cut grass on the soccer field. These are the sights, sounds and smells of game day. There's nothing more exciting than being part of that experience, even if its just sitting in the stands—team colors in full effect—and cheering on your campus team. CSU student-athletes are leaders on and off the field, and contribute to the pride we feel toward our schools. While COVID-19 has benched most sports, forcing athletes to hang up their gear for the moment, here's a look back at a few examples of the CSU dominating the competition.

Sonoma

In the mid-2000s, Sonoma State University made some waves with its rowing club. Though the club sport is not active today, it enjoyed immense popularity during that time, fielding men’s and women’s junior varsity and varsity teams. The crew members logged many hours of practice at the crack of dawn on the Petaluma River, which paid off when, in 2006, the women’s varsity team placed first at the 2006 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.

Chico

During its 50th season in 2016, Chico State’s softball team captured both the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season and conference tournament championships and made its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships. Crushing program records with 29 consecutive victories and a 55-6 record, the team was propelled by senior Haley Gilham (pictured), the winningest pitcher in program history. With 87 career victories, her 31 wins that season broke her own school record, and her 16 shutouts led the nation!
