Dr. Faye Wachs, Professor of Sociology at Cal Poly Pomona, helped implement flipped classroom pedagogy to lower the rate of repeats in a bottleneck upper division mechanical engineering course. The flipped classroom was associated with a reduction in the number of failures by 50% with two interventions over two years. Student evaluations also showed that students preferred the instructor's performance in the flipped classroom experience. Dr. Wachs co-led an assessment of the program, examining data from 10 classrooms over 2 years. During this process, undergraduate students gained hands-on research lab experience. The success of the project and its team has been recognized at multiple conferences and has resulted in scholarly publications.
