Sacramento State alumnus Gregory Kondos ’51, MA ’57 (Art) is considered one of America’s leading contemporary landscape painters. His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world including the National Academy of Design in New York, the Rives Arches Museum in France, the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum. For nearly 30 years Mr. Kondos taught art at the college level at Sacramento City College, where he founded the campus gallery, which has been named in his honor.

Mr. Kondos earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in art from Sacramento State and he has been a generous supporter of the campus. He donated his painting “River Life” to the University Library and it hangs in the lobby of the Harper Alumni Center. He also donated lithographs, which were sold to benefit the Alumni Association and the University Library. He has spoken at Alumni Association’s artist lecture series and received its Distinguished Service Award in 1994.

His many honors also include election to the National Academy of Design, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 1999 International Biennale in Florence, Italy and a Master of Drawing Award from American Artist magazine.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the culture and education of the citizens of California, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, Sacramento are proud to confer on Gregory Kondos the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.
