Sacramento State honor student Kenya Janae Burton is pursuing a degree in communication studies and minors in marketing and nonprofit administration, focusing on systemic change for at-risk communities.

As the Salinas Youth Poet Laureate, Kenya has received recognition from the California Assembly and other organizations across the country. Her proudest accomplishment is being named the district appointee for the Monterey County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, where she works with agencies to help survivors of domestic violence.

​She is a community organizer who hopes to open a nonprofit to help women and children escape the same violence she once endured.
