Since 1964, Sonoma State University has excelled in preparing effective teachers, administrators, and other school professionals. The School of Education offers a variety of programs including Teacher Credential programs in Multiple and Single Subjects, an Early Childhood Studies major, Special Education, Educational Leadership and highly valued advanced credentials and master's programs: Reading and Language, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL), Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Early Childhood Education, Special Education and Educational Leadership. It offers unique programs that are advancing the Maker movement in California and nationally, including a Maker Education Certificate Program.

The School of Education mission is to advance excellence in the education profession through university-based preparation of teachers and leaders; to inform that preparation through engagement in and dissemination of exemplary teaching and relevant scholarship and research; and to enact that preparation through collaboration with professional educators, families, and the broader educational community. The School prides itself on advising, teaching, and scholarly research that emphasize individualized and small group experiences for teacher candidates and degree program students. Programs are rigorous, focused, personalized, and highly regarded by both students and the community. In addition, field placements are carefully chosen to be in some of the best places in the region to learn about teaching and learning.
